Sales Goals

My goal with this project is to sell $100,000 of my personal belongings by December 31, 2016. My theory is that the thermometer will rise slowly at first as I spend my time packing, organizing and then moving. Once I get settled in and set up, I’ll start listing and watch the mercury rise quickly. I will document my progress here with weekly updates of actual sales.

I’ve been toying with the idea of downsizing since I watched Tom Shadyac’s Documentary I Am on January 1, 2012. While contemplating the downsizing process over the past few years I have wondered if it would be better to just drop everything off at a thrift store, move into a 400 sq ft tiny home and start from scratch. But I couldn’t do that…I know the things in my home have value and as an avid eBayer, I know selling that stuff and learning the value is the FUN part of online selling!

My hypothesis is that one can make as much money, if not more, working from home selling off personal belongings then they can by donating everything, starting over and going to a 9-5 job each day. It will be my goal to gross at least $5k/month by selling just my personal belongings, I won’t include my regular eBay inventory or sales in this total. I decided on that number based on a $100k/year salary. Anyone making $100k/year is bringing home about 60% of that;  $60k/year, or $5k/month. I realize that I need to average roughly $6,600/month to hit my $100k target by December 2016, but I believe that once I get going and start listing, that will be an obtainable goal.

So join me on this journey and enjoy the ride with me. Who knows, you might just find a treasure you have that’s worth far more money that you ever dreamed of!

UPDATE: March 25, 2016

When I got this idea 6 months ago, I anticipated that I would have my house sold and I’d be moved and up and running by the end of 2015. Well, here we are just about at the end of the first quarter of 2016 and instead of listing items, I’m packing boxes. I will still try to hit $100k by December, but the realistic side of me thinks that I should adjust my goal of hitting $100k from December 2016 to March 31, 2017. Hopefully life will cooperate and I won’t need to make any more adjustments!
